Organic vs Natural: What’s the Difference?

Organic is a regulated, audited claim. Natural, in India, is largely unregulated and self-declared.

Organic and natural sound like they should mean similar things, but in India they sit on completely different legal footing. One requires certification and audit. The other, largely, does not.

What actually differs

  • Organic is a certified, regulated term, requiring third party or peer review verification before it can legally appear on a label.
  • Natural has no formal, legally defined certification system in India, making it largely a self-declared claim by the brand using it.
  • A natural product can be entirely genuine in its claims without ever going through any external audit process.
  • An organic product, by contrast, has to pass an actual inspection and recordkeeping process to legally use the term.
  • Neither word alone guarantees quality, but organic carries a verification trail that natural, as a term, generally does not.

Our standards

Organic vs natural questions

Is a product labelled natural necessarily uncertified?
Generally yes for the natural claim specifically, since no formal certification system exists for that term in India.
Can a product be both organic and natural?
Yes, many organic products are also reasonably described as natural, though the organic claim is the one backed by certification.
Should I trust natural claims less than organic ones?
Not necessarily untrustworthy, but natural claims lack the external verification that organic certification requires.
Why does this distinction matter when shopping?
Knowing which claim is verified helps you judge how much weight to put on a label versus needing to trust the brand's word alone.
